How to prevent your chip pan catching fire

Do you use a chip pan? Here’s our safety top tips

Last week, a chip pan fire in one of our customer’s kitchens reminded us just how quickly these incidents can escalate. To prevent this from happening to you, we’re sharing urgent advice to keep your home and loved ones safe.

Why chip pans are dangerous Chip pans cause 1 in 5 UK kitchen fires, often leading to devastating injuries or damage. Ditch the pan if you can! Safer alternatives include:

· Thermostatic deep fat fryers (auto-shuts off to prevent overheating).

· Oven chips (healthier and safer).

If you still use a chip pan:

· Fill only ⅓ full – overfilling risks spills and flames.

· Never leave it unattended – stay in the kitchen.

· Dry food first – water makes oil explode.

· Turn off heat immediately if the oil smokes.

If fire strikes:

1. Stay calm – but act fast.

2. Turn off the heat (if safe).

3. Don’t move the pan – burning oil can cause horrific injuries.

4. Never use water – it creates a fireball. Instead, cover the pan with a damp cloth.

5. Get out, close the door, call 999, and stay out.
