whg gives food hamper project a helping hand

A food hamper project that supports people in food poverty over Diwali has been given a helping hand, thanks to leading Midlands landlord whg.
The Walsall-based housing association has been working with the Diwali Basket Brigade Project to distribute food parcels to customers who may be struggling to feed themselves and their families.
On 19th October colleagues at whg delivered more than 60 Diwali baskets and bags of fresh fruit and vegetables to customers who have been nominated for the support.
Connie Jennings, Social Inclusion Manager, said: “This is the Diwali Basket Brigade’s second year supporting our customers, and we are so grateful for the generosity of everyone involved. My thanks also go to colleagues who are volunteering during the Diwali weekend to get the baskets out quickly to our customers.
“These food baskets will make a huge difference to the lives of local people.”
The baskets contained store cupboard items such as rice, pasta, tinned goods and cereals along with a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables.
The Diwali Basket Brigade (DBB) Project was created by the brother of a whg colleague, who wished to give something back to the community following a serious illness.
Deepak, founder of DBB, said: “Diwali is a time of celebration and happiness. But unfortunately some families struggle to make ends meet, while others are simply feeling lonely or rejected by society. DBB is our small effort to support and spread the message of hope, happiness, and giving.”
Each year a team of around 150 volunteers distribute hundreds of food hampers to families in need across Birmingham and beyond.
