Leading Midlands’ landlord whg has been shortlisted in the Unlock Net Zero Awards for its outstanding sustainability work.

The organisation has made it to the finals in two categories;  ESG team of the year and Climate champion of the year.

The Unlock Net Zero Awards recognise and champion progress on the journey to decarbonisation for the UK housing sector and the supply chain that supports it.

whg’s ESG team made the shortlist for driving forwards positive change within the organisation. Successes include establishing a network of Sustainability Champions, with the aim of demystifying ESG across whg and circulating key messages.

Head of Sustainability & ESG Jo Shields was shortlisted alongside five other finalists  who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to combatting climate change. Jo spearheaded the decision to put whg’s sustainability work through the externally verified, pan-European RITTERWALD assessment, becoming one of the first housing providers in the UK to receive the Certified Sustainable Housing Label. In the last year, progress has surpassed expectations with her at the helm; her never-waning passion for sustainability leading to a reduction in carbon emissions of 4,000 tonnes so far, with waste cut by 26% and electricity usage by 15%.

Jo said: “Increasing sustainability and reducing carbon emissions is a key driver for whg. It’s so much more than protecting the environment. It is about creating thriving communities that support our customers in their homes, whether by reducing fuel poverty or achieving net zero carbon by 2050.

“I’m delighted that our work has been recognised in this way.”
