Window safety
If you live in a flat or taller building, it is important to understand the risks linked to open windows. The risk is greater if there are young children in your home.
Window restrictors
Many of our flats have window restrictors fitted. These safety devices stop windows from opening more than 10cm unless they are manually released. They help prevent accidental falls, especially above ground floor level.
To keep your home safe:
- make sure restrictors are in place and secure when windows are open
- if you open a window wider for cleaning or ventilation, re-engage the restrictor straight away
- never paint over window handles, hinges or restrictors, as this can stop them working properly
- avoid placing furniture near windows, as children or pets may climb
