How you can fight damp and mould in your home

As the days get colder and wetter, your home may be more prone to damp and mould. This is because the temperature difference between the outside and your home causes more condensation.

whg customer Sarah noticed the early signs of damp in her home last winter. There were small black spots on her living room wall.

Here she shares the 5 simple steps she took to protect her family and stop damp in its tracks:

  1. As soon as I noticed the problem, I bought some dehumidifiers from the shops. They were only a pound and the little crystals inside helped to absorb excess moisture in that corner of the room.

2. It’s so important to keep your home ventilated. I switch on the extractor fan and open a window in the bathroom when I’m having a shower (I’m forever reminding my husband!) and wipe down the shower doors once I’m done.

3. When I’m cooking, I pop the extractor fan on above the oven, and put lids on any pans to reduce the amount of condensation in the kitchen.

4. I’ve moved all my furniture away from the wall by an inch or two to give the walls room to breathe.

5. I used to dry my clothes on the radiator but I’ve now realised this can actually cause mould.  Clothes can still dry outside when it’s cold, it just takes a bit longer. Or, I use a clothes airer in a room with a window open or an extractor fan on.
