A customer in Pelsall recently experienced a devastating fire in their flat caused by an e-bike. Fortunately, an adult was alone in the property at the time and escaped without injury, but the fire caused significant damage to their home.

The fire started overnight while the e-bike was charging in the kitchen, and the customer was woken by the fire alarm in the early hours of the morning.

The fire was caused by the lithium-ion battery, which is commonly used in e-bikes, e-scooters/mobility scooters, mobile phones, handheld power tools, and some children’s toys. While these batteries are generally safe when used properly, they can pose a serious fire risk if overcharged or damaged. In fact, government data shows that in 2023, e-scooters and e-bikes caused nearly one fire per day.

The fire service responded quickly to the 999 call but the home, in Charles Crescent, was heavily smoke damaged throughout, with significant fire damage to the kitchen. Tragically, the fire also claimed the lives of the customer’s two cats.

Staying safe:

  • Don’t charge electricals overnight, when you are out or asleep.
  • Unplug your charge when it’s finished.
  • Don’t charge in your bedroom or where your escape route can be blocked.
  • Use branded chargers.
