Derelict shops in Willenhall could be demolished to make way for new homes as part of plans to transform the small site.

whg has submitted an application to Walsall Council to transform the row of four retail units with apartments above and 18 garages on Shelley Road into nine two and three bed homes.

The disused, technically challenging and currently mixed use site has stood empty for more than 10 years, most recently being used in a training exercise by local fire fighters. The leases on the garages expired some time ago.

Under the proposals  demolition will be followed by the building of homes for affordable rent.

Rebecca Bennett Casserly, Corporate Director of Development, said: “This redevelopment will be a welcome addition to the community, helping to revitalise the area by replacing unsightly and derelict buildings with quality, affordable homes.

“We know local residents are keen to see something happen here. I hope they welcome the proposals we are putting forward for planning, which form part of a wider approach to create more new homes by making the best use of our disused assets.”

whg recently announced plans to redevelop an additional commercial site in Willenhall. The housing association has submitted an application to convert its Willenhall office, Beechwood House, into nine one-bed and five three-bed apartments for rent with net zero carbon credentials.
