Staying safe this Bonfire Night
With Bonfire Night here, many people will be looking forward to fireworks and celebrations, with events also taking place over the weekend.
While fireworks and bonfires can be a great way to bring people together, they can also pose safety risks and cause disruption.
We’ve brought together some advice from West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Service to help everyone enjoy the celebrations safely.
Enjoy fireworks safely
The safest way to enjoy fireworks and bonfires is at an organised community display, where trained professionals are responsible for managing safety.
If you are planning your own celebrations, make sure you follow the Firework Code. This includes keeping fireworks away from buildings, following the manufacturer’s instructions and never returning to a firework once it has been lit. Have suitable fire safety equipment, such as buckets of sand or water or a fire extinguisher, available.
Sparklers can also cause serious burns and should never be given to children under five.
Fireworks and antisocial behaviour
Although most people enjoy Bonfire Night responsibly, the misuse of fireworks can lead to injuries, property damage and antisocial behaviour (ASB).
West Midlands Police is reminding people that it’s against the law to throw or set off fireworks, including sparklers, in streets, parks and other public spaces unless they are part of an authorised display.
Fireworks must never be aimed at people, homes, vehicles or buildings.
Looking out for neighbours
Fireworks can be distressing for people who are sensitive to loud noises, as well as young children and pets.
If you’re celebrating over Bonfire Night or the weekend, being mindful of those around you can help everyone enjoy the occasion.
Reporting concerns
If you witness fireworks being used dangerously or experience firework-related antisocial behaviour, you can report it to West Midlands Police online or by calling 101.
If someone is in immediate danger or there is an emergency, always call 999.
You can also report ongoing antisocial behaviour affecting your neighbourhood to whg.
By staying safe and looking out for one another, we can help make Bonfire Night and the weekend celebrations enjoyable for everyone.
