Home adaptations
If you need help getting around your home or are finding it harder to do everyday tasks due to a disability, we may be able to help make things easier for you.
Aids and adaptations
Aids and adaptations are changes to your home to help you live safely and independently. They can make daily tasks easier and improve your comfort and wellbeing. These can include small changes, such as grab rails or handrails, or larger changes like ramps, walk-in showers or stairlifts. Aids and adaptations are available to anyone who needs them.

How it works
If you think you, or someone in your home, would benefit from an aid or adaptation, please contact us. We will guide you through the process and, if needed, arrange for a trained assessor to visit your home and recommend the best solution.
whg customer, Ann, told us:
“Trying to get into the bath was painful and making me out of breath. An Occupational Therapist assessed me and then someone came out to take measurements and see what I needed. I was given a choice of tiles and I chose a lovely bright floor.
You wouldn’t believe the difference having a shower does for your mental health. It has made all the difference in the world.”
How to apply for aids and adaptations
Minor adaptations
Minor adaptations are small changes, such as:
- Grab rails or handrails
- Key safes
- Lever taps
- Half steps or small access improvements
We can usually arrange these quickly.

If needed, one of our trained assessors will visit you to understand your needs and arrange the work.
Major adaptations
Major adaptations are larger changes, such as:
- Stairlifts or floor lifts
- Walk-in showers
- Ramps or access changes
What to do if you need a major adaptation:
These are usually arranged through your local council using a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). This grant is means-tested, so you may need to contribute towards the cost depending on your financial situation.
To request a major adaptation:
- Contact your local council to request an assessment.
- In Walsall, visit Walsall Council’s website or call 01922 652171
For all major adaptation requests an occupational therapist will visit your home to assess your needs and recommend the most suitable adaptations. This will be arranged by your local council.
