whg shortlisted for national development team award
Midlands housing association whg has been shortlisted for Best Development Team at the Inside Housing Development Awards 2026.
The shortlisting recognises the team’s work to deliver quality, affordable homes and shape stronger communities, from major regeneration projects to finding new uses for small pockets of overlooked land.
The awards attracted a record number of entries this year, with judges reviewing more than 300 submissions across the categories.
In 2025/26, whg’s Development team completed 270 new homes and started work on a further 182. Alongside this delivery, the team has helped transform some of the region’s most challenging sites into places people are proud to call home.
In Wolverhampton, whg has restored the Grade II listed former Royal Hospital as Nightingale House, a wellbeing scheme for people aged over 55. The building, which had stood derelict since 1997, now sits at the heart of the wider Royal Quarter regeneration.
The team also acted as master build for the Goscote Lane Corridor programme, Walsall’s largest housing regeneration project, delivering nearly 1,000 homes alongside green spaces, play areas and footpaths.
Its innovative Small Sites Strategy is creating opportunities to turn disused garage courts and underused land into much-needed affordable homes. Working with local builders, the approach also aims to reduce fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour and improve neighbourhoods for existing residents.
Corporate Director of Development, Rebecca Bennett Casserly, said: “Being shortlisted is fantastic recognition for our team and the partners who help us turn ambitious plans into homes and communities.
“Good development starts with understanding a place and what its people need. Whether we’re restoring a much-loved landmark, leading a major regeneration programme or bringing a disused garage site back into use, we want our work to make a lasting difference to the whole neighbourhood.
“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together and the part our team is playing in shaping the future of communities across the Midlands.”
The winners will be announced on Tuesday 24 November 2026 at the InterContinental O2 in London, as part of Housing Week, London.
