The redevelopment of the Wolverhampton Royal Hospital site is moving forwards after revised plans were submitted.

Following recent collaboration between Cannock based developers Jessup, Homes England, housing provider whg, and BPN Architects – and guidance from City of Wolverhampton Council – updated designs have been submitted for the redevelopment of the Wolverhampton Royal Hospital and adjacent land. The plans have been proposed with a view to getting planning consent and commencing on site in Spring 2021.

The site already has the benefit of full planning consent, but this new application is intended to improve on the intended re-use of the Royal Hospital building itself. The proposed design makes best use of the space within the iconic listed building whilst retaining its character and will be used by whg to provide well-being apartments for the over 55s. The area behind the building will be entirely new development for a mixture of affordable and open market homes for rent and sale.

Jessup CEO Clive Jessup commented “We are delighted to now be submitting updated planning on the redevelopment of this site having consulted with all partners and look forward to delivering homes with our client whg, using our local skilled supply chain. We have worked to provide a positive future for the well-loved Royal Hospital building and provide much needed homes to the community of Wolverhampton.”

Director of BPN Architects Dean Shaw commented “We are excited to be involved in the regeneration of this important listed building, very much a part of Wolverhampton’s heritage and also in the wider development, supporting this new strategic link with the City Centre, integrating housing in an urban setting.”

whg Corporate Director of Development, Rebecca Bennett Casserly commented: “whg is thrilled to be working in partnership with Jessup on this high quality designed, mixed tenure, multi-generational scheme. The use of complementary beautiful open spaces will help ensure a vibrant sense of place is created for a new community which will readily be able to take advantage of the services and amenities the city has to offer.”

City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Economy, Councillor Stephen Simkins, said: “The submission of a detailed planning application for this strategically important site is great news for regeneration in our city.

“We will work with Jessup and whg to ensure a suitable scheme is brought forward that will transform this area and deliver new housing and hundreds of jobs – making the former Royal site a key gateway to the city centre.

“Projects such as these are critical to our recovery from Covid-19 – creating jobs, driving further investment and giving our businesses confidence to get back on their feet and grow.”
