Colleagues from whg have been recognised for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

Colleagues from several teams at the leading Midland’s landlord have received Star Volunteer Awards from Walsall for All, a programme working to bring communities within the borough together.

They all stepped forward to offer their services after whg decided to make colleagues available to support other statutory and voluntary sector groups during the pandemic.

Asset Management and Project Management colleagues were recognised after leaping into action to help Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust transform Holly Bank House back into a 17-bed discharge facility. The former stroke unit in Short Heath was transformed in just two days, enabling more patients to be released from hospital and freeing up beds at Walsall Manor Hospital.

Meanwhile colleagues from whg’s Health & Wellbeing Team, Employment and Skills Teams and Tenancy Services Teams picked up certificates for contacting in excess of 8,000 vulnerable customers since lockdown began, to check on their welfare and offer support.

Gas Engineer, Darren Cook, really has gone “the extra mile” during lockdown, clocking up hundreds of miles to deliver in excess of 3,000 food parcels to some of Walsall’s most vulnerable households. Darren, who has continued to carry out emergency repairs and gas servicing as part of whg’s asset management team, also supported the community hubs which were set up by Walsall Council to coordinate the borough’s response to the pandemic.

whg’s Chief Executive Gary Fulford said: “We are really proud of these colleagues, who have provided an invaluable lifeline to some of the borough’s most vulnerable households at this challenging time.

“I’m delighted that their commitment to helping those in our communities has been recognised in this way.”

Councillor Garry Perry, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Communities, said: “It goes without saying we will be forever indebted to the countless individuals and organisations who stepped up when our Country and Community needed them. whg were one such partner organisation whose support for our resilient community response has been tremendous, deliveries, food parcels and outreach ensured the most vulnerable in our borough were not forgotten.”
