whg is encouraging more people to consider an apprenticeship as it gets behind National Apprenticeship Week.

The leading Midlands’ landlord is backing the campaign, which runs from 8th to 14th February, by showcasing the success stories of its own apprentices.

These include Raf, who joined whg as an admin apprentice in whg’s facilities team more than three years ago. Raf had never worked in housing before so the apprenticeship gave him a gateway into a new sector. He is now an IT technician with us and working towards a degree in IT solutions.

Another great example is Sam. Sam started his career with whg as a maintenance operations apprentice more than eight years ago. He then moved onto a painting and decorating role as an improver before becoming a trainee carpenter. He is now a multi-skilled carpenter with a whole range of trades skills under his belt and is taking that first step up into a role with people management responsibilities as part of our Mate to Manager programme.

Theresa Huburn, whg’s Corporate Director of People and Learning, said: “We are immensely proud of our apprenticeship programme, and currently have 39 apprentices in the business, ranging from those in housing and admin to carpentry and plumbing. Among these are eight colleagues upskilling and working towards degrees as part of a Higher Level apprenticeship.

“The apprenticeship model has been a great way for us to build for the future, starting with spotting talent from outside the organisation to supporting growth from within.”
