whg has lent its support to help vulnerable households have a Christmas to remember.

The leading Midlands’ landlord was one of the sponsors of The People’s Studio’s Sharing is Caring  Christmas event, which was held in Walsall town centre on 23 December.

The event provided a ‘no questions asked’, supermarket-style, free food service that combined a Covid-secure Christmas grotto and arts workshop for younger guests to also enjoy.  The Christmas event was planned and  co-ordinated in under 3 weeks and helped over 100 households, by providing them with free food parcels and essential items.

Lisa Lucy Gakunga, one of the key organisers of the event, said: “We had to deliver a service that was warm and welcoming, whilst ensuring that our staff, our volunteers and our guests were kept Covid-19 safe. It was challenging at times, but we managed to pull the event off by ensuring that people observed social distancing, sanitised regularly and wore the appropriate face-masks when asked to do so.”

Councillor Garry Perry, deputy leader for resilient communities at Walsall Council added: “A terrific thank you goes to Andre-Donovan Reid, founder of  KIONDO and the People’s Studio for orchestrating such a great event, along with all the partnerships who stepped up to make it such a success.”

“Despite Covid-19, the team were able to safely bring Christmas cheer to some of the most vulnerable residents in Walsall. This was a truly commendable gesture that brought the community together and made a positive difference to so many lives, I am so proud of each and every one of the volunteers that made this a reality. I look forward to hearing more about the amazing work KIONDO and many other partnerships have planned for the future.”
