Customers from leading Midlands landlord whg have headed to London to have their say on a new government report into social housing.

Customers Linda Cole, who has been a whg tenant since 2003, and Matt Humphries, spoke to the housing ministry about how the stigma around being a social housing tenant could be addressed.

The government Green Paper, titled “A new deal for social housing”, looks at ways to improve fairness, quality and safety to residents living in social housing across the country.

Among the five core themes is one that looks at how to tackle stigma and celebrate thriving communities.

Linda and Matt, who is a project officer at whg, were invited to give their input on how public perceptions about social housing tenants can be changed. They also addressed the need to challenge the media in the way they represent tenants who live in social housing.

Linda said: “It’s so important to me to get involved and I think as many tenants as possible should attend events like this and put their point across.

“There are some really good tenants out there and they need to speak up and challenge the unfair and untrue stereotypes that social housing tenants face.”

The consultation, launched with the Green Paper, gives everyone the opportunity to submit views on proposals for the future of social housing and will run until 6 November 2018. To get involved click here.
