We are one of the Midlands' leading and most successful providers of affordable homes.

To mark Volunteers' Week, whg is sharing the story of one of its volunteers.

Delena Millard, aged 48 and from Rushall, has been volunteering with whg since September 2016.

She said: “I had been working in retail for 20 years but I have always been interested in working in the housing sector. My partner helped me get in touch with whg’s Volunteering Works programme, which I saw as a great opportunity to build up my skills and experience.

“The programme was really good and I learned so much from it. I gained qualifications including food hygiene and health and safety and was also given tips on how to write a CV, which was really useful. I also made new friends, who I have kept in touch with since I completed the programme.

“After completing the programme, I volunteered with whg’s Tenancy Services team, where I helped with administrative duties. I then moved into the Marketing and Leasehold team and have provided administrative support to the team.

“Being a volunteer with whg has really increased my confidence. When I first started, my computer skills were lacking, but now I’ve really developed my skills and I’m confident using a computer.

“I would urge anyone to volunteer with whg – everyone has been really friendly and encouraging and I have gained so much experience. I hope to gain a permanent job in housing and volunteering with whg has really helped me on my path to employment.”

Pip Hughes, whg’s Market and Leasehold Tenancies Manager, has supported Delena during her volunteering.

She said: “Market and Leasehold Services is a small busy team dealing with a wide range of issues.  Having Delena as part of the team has been a brilliant way of providing administrative support to the team whilst giving Delena the opportunity to discover and improve new skills.

“Delena has been a great asset to the Market & Leasehold Team. I can already see that volunteering has helped, not only with developing skills within an office environment, but also building confidence to be interview ready.”

whg recruits around 50 new volunteers per year, who all on average give around five hours each of their spare time per week, over 40 weeks. If you are interested in volunteering, find out more here or call whg’s Employment and Training Team on 0300 555 6666.
