Families enjoyed fun in the sun when whg brought the beach to Walsall for its annual customer open day.

Under the Sea was held outside whg’s Hatherton Street office on Thursday, 17th August and saw around 700 people attend for a day of family-friendly fun.

The event gave visitors the opportunity to find out more about whg, with more than 20 stalls showcasing the services and support that the leading Midlands landlord offers to its customers.

This included a stall for whg’s Rent First campaign, which is urging customers to prioritise their rent payments. Customers were able to speak to colleagues from whg’s Income Collection Team, where they were given advice and support, whilst they could also enjoy a Crystal Maze style ticket machine.

Another stall showcased Black Country Click Start, a £3.9 million initiative in partnership with Accord Group that has been funded through the European Social Fund and Big Lottery. Customers were encouraged to sign up to the scheme, which will increase customers financial and digital skills, helping them on their route to employment.

There were fun activities for children, too, with a giant sandpit, hook a duck competition, face painting and hair braiding, and free gifts were given out to youngsters decked out in deep sea fancy dress.

Organisations including O2, Walsall College, Walsall Adult and Community College, South Staffordshire Water, Walsall Council, Jump In, Claudia’s Kitchen, Johnstone's Paints and Meraki Arts Workshop also exhibited at the event.

whg customer Shafeen Khan came along to Under the Sea with her three children, Muhammed Faheem, Aniya and Hajrah and niece, Sumaiya.

Shafeen, from Darlaston, said: “It was a great event and was really well organised, with so much on for the children. We all had a really good day out and we got lots of really useful information and advice.”

The event was officially opened by Cllr Marco Longhi, Mayor of Walsall, Eddie Hughes, Chair of whg Board and Gary Fulford, whg’s Group Chief Executive, who all participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Donations made during the day will be given to Alzheimer’s Society, which is whg’s chosen charity for 2017/18. More than £600 was raised for the good cause.

Days out to the seaside can be expensive for families during the holidays, so we wanted to give our customers a great, free beach-themed experience. We had such a good turnout for the event, great weather and the feedback we had from customers and colleagues on the day has been very positive.

“This event is very important for whg as it gives our customers an insight into the variety of services we provide. We are more than just a landlord, providing a range of services which really make a difference to the lives of customers in our communities.”
