We are one of the Midlands' leading and most successful providers of affordable homes.

A Walsall community came together to enjoy a day in the sunshine, thanks to a family friendly event organised by leading Midlands landlord whg and local partners.

The Big Lunch event was held at Swannies Field, in Goscote, on Saturday, 17th June. Swannies Field neighbours the Waters Keep estate, a 412-home development that has breathed new life into the Goscote area thanks to a partnership between whg and Keepmoat.

A host of fun activities were on offer for residents, including an outdoor barbecue, face painting and arts and crafts. Residents were also invited to bring their own picnic and a time capsule was planted to mark the day.

Community artist Pete Chaplin also attended the event to draw portraits of residents, which will be combined for a larger piece of art work in the future.

Before the event, families had also attended a number of workshops to create eye-catching banners, which helped to advertise the event to local residents.

Money raised by the event will be given to The Glebe Centre, which provides hot meals and clothing.

The event was held to coincide with the Great Get Together weekend, which was a national event held in tribute to MP Jo Cox.

Partners involved in the Big Lunch included whg, Edgar Stammers Primary Academy, Kangaroo Pouch Nursery, Bloxwich Community Partnership, Goscote Greenacres, St Aiden’s Care Team and Blakenall Community Centre.

Hyacinth Austin, whg’s Diversity and Equality Manager, worked with the partners to organise the event.

She said: “It was great to see the community come together and enjoy a fun, family friendly day in Goscote. We want to say a big thank you to all of our partners for joining us in organising this successful event.

“We were delighted to host this event to coincide with the Great Get Together weekend, in tribute to Jo Cox MP. Jo wanted to bring communities closer together and an event like this did just that.”
