A community garden in the heart of Walsall is flying the flag as one of the nation’s best green spaces.

Caldmore Village Festival Group raised the flag at Caldmore Community Garden, after receiving a well-deserved Green Flag Community Award.

The garden, which is leased from leading Midlands’ landlord whg and supported by Walsall Council, has evolved over the last eight years from a derelict piece of land thanks to the hard work of volunteers.

Over the last 18 months the garden has played a vital role for people throughout lockdown as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely.

Chairman of Caldmore Village Festival Mohammed Arif said: “The staff and volunteers have worked extra-hard during the Covid-19 pandemic to keep the community garden open to the public while protecting the users and keeping themselves safe.

“I want to congratulate everyone involved in maintaining the Green Flag status. We are proud of our Green Flag flying high. We are grateful for our partners Walsall Council and whg for their continued support.”

Director of Housing at whg, Gary Brookes said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone at Caldmore Village Festival Group for creating such an amazing space that is used by so many of our customers.

“Green spaces such as this have been vital during lockdown to give families a place to go and the impact this wonderful garden has had on our customers’ health and wellbeing over the last 18 months cannot be underestimated.”

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making Caldmore Community Garden worthy of a Green Flag Award.

“To meet the requirements demanded by the scheme is testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers who do so much to ensure that Caldmore Community Garden has high standards of horticulture, safety and environmental management and is a place that supports people to live healthy lives.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
