Budding tradeswomen are building a career in construction, thanks to a free scheme being offered by leading Midlands’ landlord whg.

A group of eight women have been learning a range of trades skills as part of its UPLIFT 2 Women into Construction training programme.

Over the four week course, which was run in partnership with Walsall College, participants were taught about painting and decorating, health and safety, asbestos awareness, working at heights and scaffolding. They also obtained a Green Labourer Card, which allows them to work on construction sites.

In January they will be moving on to a two week work placement with local social enterprise Rising Stars, to put their new found skills to the test. Any of the women interested in a career in plumbing or carpentry will them move on to a two week work placement with contractors CLC.

Donna Goodall, Employment Engagement Officer, said: “Our first UPLIFT programme, which was launched in the summer, was hugely successful, with 82% of participants securing jobs as a result.

“This group of women are flying ahead and have produced some really amazing work – they all have bright futures ahead of them.”

Rising Stars have made a number of trainee painter and decorator opportunities available following completion of the programme, while contractors CLC have three apprentice vacancies open to participants.

The women are being supported throughout the pilot by whg’s Employment and Training team and after completion of the work placement will be further supported to apply for opportunities within the construction sector.
