Our story
Below are stories from real whg colleagues about their careers at whg.
Bryn Reece, Senior Building Surveyor
I have been whg’s Senior Building Surveyor since 2010; prior to this I was Assistant Property Services Manager.
My career began in 1983 when I started on a YTS scheme and was chosen as a bricklaying apprentice within Walsall Council. After I completed this I continued studying and went on to attain the National Certificate in Construction. In 1993 I was moved to the emergency response team where I developed the multi-skilling aspect of my role, qualifying as a plumber as well as practicing carpentry and plastering. When whg was formed in a stock transfer in 2003 I put forward my aspirations to become a manager and fulfilled a temporary foreman’s role until an opportunity arose as Assistant Property Services Manager. In 2010 I was appointed as Senior Building Surveyor, a new role where I am enjoying the challenges of delivering major schemes of work with the Borough. One thing is certain – I would not change a thing!
The role requires a high level construction qualification or management qualification coupled with extensive trade experience. The support I have gained from whg in my career and qualifications has been outstanding – without it I would not be where I am now. There has been an investment placed in me which I can only repay by doing the best that I can in my job.
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the results of the work that we undertake in my home town.
