energy efficiency
General advice
- Try using energy saving lightbulbs - they are more efficient than normal lightbulbs, saving both money and energy.
- Turn off appliances at the mains when not in use; it is safer and it saves money.
Washing machines and tumble dryers
- Always wash a full load and if you can't, use a half load or economy programme if your machine has one.
- Always use the low temperature programme.
- Do not put really wet clothes into a tumble dryer; wring them out or spin dry them first. It is much faster and it will save energy, therefore saving you money.
Fridges
- Do not leave the door open for longer than necessary.
- Defrost your fridge regularly to keep it running efficiently and cheaply. If it tends to frost up quickly, check the door seal.
- If you have to put your fridge next to a cooker or boiler, leave a good gap between them.
