NOW
New Opportunities for Walsall (NOW) in health and regeneration
NOW is a three year capacity building programme in partnership with NHS Walsall. The programme aims to regenerate communities through improved housing, better health and access to training and employment opportunites. The programme has been funded through the Big Lottery and VIEW.
What will NOW do?
- Improve health for everyone.
- Help people find work and learn new skills to stay in work.
- Help people to increase their money and provide practical help to support their family.
- Give young people something to do and someone to listen to them.
- Use art to improve communities.
Who will the NOW programme support?
NOW will design different projects that will help to support a wide range of people such as young people, families, young parents, older people and people with health problems.
How will people benefit from NOW?
- Local people recruited into paid positions as Community Champions.
- Rewarding people and valuing community knowledge.
- Developing initiatives in local centres which will excite and encourage people to get involved.
- Making sure people know where to get health and advice from.
- Providing advice and support for long term health conditions.
- Having a say on how services are designed and provided.
Community Champions
The Community Champions have been recruited from neighbourhoods through Walsall, and come from the communities in which they work to ensure that they understand its needs and issues. They are based out in the community and will work with individuals, local groups and organisations to develop community projects and activities.
They spend their time visiting homes to provide doorstep advice to those who cannot access services. They will make sure that people know where to get advice from and accompanying them if needed. Community Champions will work alongside Health Trainers to improve the health of the community and provide signposting to other services.
